This preview of the SurveyCTO AI form tools lets you be one of the first to use these new AI creations for coding SurveyCTO form expressions, and reviewing survey questions.

Please note: This is an experimental, public version of the new AI form tools. Dobility and our partners at Higher Bar AI, PBC, are intentionally inviting SurveyCTO users to join us on a journey of principle-driven innovation by interacting with our new AI tools so that they become better, more effective, and can add true value to users’ data collection workflows and survey research.

With this in mind, you can expect to sometimes receive mistakes from these tools. It’s extremely important that you carefully test any expressions you receive, and carefully consider your AI question reviews. The more people that use the AI form tools, the better they will become. We’re excited to have you with us on our quest to raise the bar for data quality with AI. Approach curiously, use thoughtfully, and have fun.

Ready to get started? Navigate down to the SurveyCTO AI Form Tools, and upload a SurveyCTO form in Excel (.xlsx) format (i.e., your form definition) in the first box. Once your form is uploaded, you will see all questions listed out one by one, so be prepared if your form is very long! Then, get started asking the AI form tools to help you code expressions, and/or review your form questions.

AI Expression Coding

Use AI expression coding to generate expressions that you can use to program your SurveyCTO forms.

  1. Describe the expression you would like to create in natural language.
  2. Tell the tool what type of expression you would like to generate, or to select Auto-detect if you’re not sure of the type of expression you need.
  3. Always test the expressions you get from the tool!
  4. Keep in mind that if you have uploaded a form before using the tool, it will use your form’s field names as part of the expressions it gives you, and you can use field names to identify questions in your expression requests.

The AI expression coding tool can help you create expressions for constraints, relevance, and calculations.

Examples:

How can I ensure respondents only enter ages between 18 and 45?

How can I make all the questions in “Group C” appear only to respondents who answered “Yes” to the first question?

How can I measure how many minutes each interview takes in the field?

Learn more about using expressions in your forms.

AI Question Review

Once your form is uploaded to the tool, you’ll see text asking you to “scroll to view,” and as you scroll down, you’ll see all your questions listed out one by one! (If your form is very long, be prepared, this could take a momentor longer).

Simple click the “AI review” button for any question or group of questions that you want a review of to receive AI-generated feedback.

The AI question review provides an assessment on your question (or groups of questions) across a variety of metrics. You can expect a response that might include feedback on your survey methodologies, best practices for framing sensitive topics, suggestions of ways to rewrite questions to be clearer or more inclusive, and more!

This tool also ranks each question assessment on an importance scale of 1 to 5, categorizes its answer, and allows you to copy and paste both current and suggested replacement text for maximum convenience.

Example:

Importance: 2 out of 5
Evaluation type: bias [ hover for evaluated text ]
Current text: contest
Replacement suggested: choice set

Give the AI question review tool more data for better results with the optional “Survey context” and “Survey locations and languages” boxes.

For example, you could share:

Survey context (optional): This study will measure the mental health of new mothers in a rural area.

Survey locations and languages (optional): This survey will take place in Peru. Most or all respondents will speak Spanish as their primary or only language.
