One year after they were awarded grants for their research, PhD candidates Isabelle Salcher and Muhammad Zia Mehmood share findings.
In 2021, we awarded two of the first-ever SurveyCTO Research Grants to PhD candidates Isabelle Salcher and Muhammad Zia Mehmood. Now, they’re back to share findings from their projects related to MSMEs and their role in international development.
In this webinar, you’ll learn:
- Key insights from academic research on the role of MSMEs in development
- How SurveyCTO helped the researchers to carry out their projects
- Fieldwork challenges and lessons you can take away
- Tips for primary data collection in academic research
Isabelle Salcher, PhD candidate at New York University studied “Microentrepreneurs and Gendered Opportunity Costs of Time”
Isabelle focused on how opportunity costs of time differ by gender and to what extent domestic responsibilities explain different opportunity costs. She explores how these opportunity costs affect women micro entrepreneurs.
Muhammad Zia Mehmood, PhD candidate at the University of California, Berkeley, studied, “Training with Technology – Lessons from a field experiment with Kenyan MSMEs.”
Muhammad’s research focuses on how SMS-based training and technology affect business performance for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Kenya. He explores the effectiveness of these business trainings, how likely MSME owners are to pay for them, and the effect on business performance.
